This resource is intended to provide general guidance to faculty about Academic Freedom, emphasize the importance of campus safety and disseminate the content of important policies, expectations and supportive resources related to civil discourse.

As you prepare for the coming academic semester, our hopes are that instructors will 1) develop a course-level generative AI use policy and actively discuss with students about expectations for generative AI use in the work for your class, 2) promote equitable and inclusive use of the technology, and 3) work with colleagues across campus to determine ethical and scholarly applications of generative AI for preparing students to succeed in an evolving digital landscape. 

Michigan State University's interim guide to using generative AI in research and creative activities establishes a framework for responsibly managing research data in alignment with state and federal laws, institutional policies, and intellectual property rights. It provides directives on their ethical use and cautions against risks such as misinformation and bias. 

At MSU, students don’t just earn a degree. We are preparing students for the future. The Office of Undergraduate Education works to ensure that all MSU students receive the support needed to learn, persist, and graduate in a timely fashion.

In the land-grant, problem-solving tradition, Michigan State University’s research breakthroughs have improved life for people around the world, from the cross-fertilization of corn in the 1870s to successful anticancer drugs in the 1960s, and then to novel approaches for treating and stopping the spread of malaria in the 21st century.
